Bellingshausen was born in 1778 on the island of Saaremaa, which is now part of Estonia. He joined the Russian Navy at the age of 14 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1819, he was given command of a two-ship expedition to explore the Southern Ocean.

Bellingshausen's expedition set sail from Kronstadt, Russia, in July 1819. The ships were the Vostok and the Mirny. The Vostok was commanded by Bellingshausen himself, and the Mirny was commanded by Mikhail Lazarev.

The expedition sailed south into the Southern Ocean, and on January 27, 1820, they sighted land. They had found the Antarctic mainland.

Bellingshausen and his crew spent the next several months exploring the Antarctic coast. They charted the coastline, and they also made a number of important scientific observations.

Bellingshausen's expedition returned to Russia in July 1821. Their discovery of the Antarctic mainland was a major milestone in the history of exploration.

Bellingshausen was awarded the Free Download of St. George, Russia's highest military honor, for his discovery of the Antarctic mainland. He continued to serve in the Russian Navy until his retirement in 1839.

Bellingshausen died in 1852 at the age of 74. He is considered one of the greatest explorers of all time.
