The book tells the story of a young man named Hans who flees Nazi Germany in 1938. He arrives in the United States with nothing but the clothes on his back and a few dollars in his pocket. He quickly learns English and gets a job as a factory worker. He is later drafted into the US Army and fights in World War II. After the war, he goes to college and earns a degree in economics. He then gets a job as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. In 1976, he is appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors by President Gerald Ford.

Hans's story is a testament to the American Dream. He came to this country with nothing and achieved great success. He is a role model for all immigrants who come to this country in search of a better life.
