In 1963, Black was arrested and jailed for his participation in the Birmingham campaign. He was released after several days, but the experience only strengthened his resolve. Later Life and Legacy

Timuel Black continued to work for social justice throughout his life. He taught at the University of Chicago for many years, and he also served as a consultant to the Smithsonian Institution and other organizations. In 2005, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Timuel Black died on February 11, 2016, at the age of 97. He left behind a legacy of fighting for justice and equality. He was a true American hero.
