Corporal Harold Jorgen Skaarup was born in Denmark on August 23, 1923. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1929. He was a bright and curious child, and he excelled in school. When World War II broke out, Skaarup was eager to do his part. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942.
Skaarup was assigned to the 5th Armoured Regiment, 8th Princess Louise. He served with distinction in the Italian Campaign and the Northwest Europe Campaign. He was wounded in action twice, but he always returned to the front lines.
In 1945, Skaarup was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in action. He was also mentioned in dispatches for his leadership and dedication.
After the war, Skaarup returned to Canada and resumed his education. He graduated from university with a degree in engineering. He worked as an engineer for many years.
Skaarup never forgot his experiences in the war. He was a proud veteran and he was always willing to share his story with others. He died in 2014 at the age of 90.
