Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1925. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a homemaker. Malcolm's father was killed by white supremacists when Malcolm was six years old, and his mother was institutionalized shortly thereafter. Malcolm and his siblings were sent to live in foster homes and orphanages.

As a teenager, Malcolm dropped out of school and moved to Boston, where he worked as a shoeshine boy and a waiter. He also began to get involved in crime, and by the age of 20, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison for armed robbery.

While in prison, Malcolm X began to read and study the teachings of the Nation of Islam, a black nationalist group founded by Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm was drawn to the Nation of Islam's message of self-reliance and black pride, and he soon became a follower of Elijah Muhammad.

After his release from prison in 1952, Malcolm X became a leading spokesman for the Nation of Islam. He traveled the country, giving speeches and organizing rallies. Malcolm X's fiery rhetoric and his advocacy for black separatism made him a controversial figure, but he also gained a large following among African Americans.

In 1964, Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam. He had become disillusioned with Elijah Muhammad's leadership, and he began to develop his own ideas about black liberation. Malcolm X founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, and he continued to travel the world, speaking out against racism and colonialism.

Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965 by three members of the Nation of Islam. He was 39 years old. Despite his short life, Malcolm X had a profound impact on the civil rights movement and on the lives of African Americans.

Malcolm X's Legacy

Malcolm X's legacy is complex and contested. He has been praised for his courage and his commitment to black liberation, but he has also been criticized for his advocacy of violence and his anti-white rhetoric.

Despite the controversy surrounding his life, Malcolm X remains a powerful and inspiring figure for many African Americans. He is seen as a symbol of resistance and self-determination, and his words continue to resonate with people around the world.
