Coal Miners On Strike In The Early 20th Century Killing For Coal: America S Deadliest Labor War

The Ludlow Massacre and the Colorado Coal Field War

In the early 20th century, the coal industry in the United States was a brutal and dangerous place to work. Miners toiled long hours in cramped and unsafe conditions, and they were often paid poverty wages. In 1913, a strike by coal miners in Colorado erupted into a violent conflict that would become known as the Colorado Coal Field War.

The strike began in September 1913, when miners at the Rockefeller-owned Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) walked off the job in protest of low wages and poor working conditions. The company responded by hiring armed guards to protect its property and intimidate the strikers. Violence soon broke out, and by the end of the year, dozens of people had been killed.

In April 1914, the conflict reached a boiling point when a group of strikers and their families were massacred by the Colorado National Guard at a tent colony in Ludlow. The Ludlow Massacre shocked the nation and led to a public outcry against the violence in Colorado.

The Colorado Coal Field War finally ended in 1915, but the legacy of violence and injustice continued to haunt the state for years to come. The Ludlow Massacre remains one of the darkest chapters in American labor history, and it is a reminder of the sacrifices that workers have made in the fight for their rights.
