The Hayden Geological Survey

In 1870, Jackson joined the Hayden Geological Survey, which was led by Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden. The survey's mission was to explore the Yellowstone region and to document its natural resources. Jackson's photographs of the Yellowstone area were some of the first images of the region to be widely seen by the public. His photographs helped to convince Congress to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872.

Later Career

After the Hayden Geological Survey, Jackson continued to photograph the American West. He also worked as a painter, and his paintings were exhibited in galleries across the country. In 1898, he published a book of his photographs, entitled "The Wonders of the Yellowstone."
